Day 6: A long day in the saddle

First things first...as I promised the details of our kitchen! Although I think a picture is worth a 1000 words in this case.

Neil prepares oatmeal I am making some french press coffee

As you can see our kitchen looks a lot like a bathroom, but dont let the shower and sink fool you. This dual purpose room has worked for both occasions all week, and like I said before this hotel is upscale.

Our luxurious room packed full of triathlon gear.. (we did get the upgrade to a handicap room which allowed for storage room for our bikes!)

So now on to today's task- Bike between 4-5 hours with some time trial efforts. We started about 10:30 am and the temperature was already 75 deg, so it was going to be a toasty one today.

Neil apparently thinks this pace is too slow

Only an hour into our ride...

1st water stop then 15min time trial next

My best game face

Neil looking super-cruisy!

After 3 hours in the 90 plus degree heat we needed to get some water, and there just happened to be some gelato in the near future. After hours of not seeing water, greenery, trees, buildings we simply stumble upon Lake Las Vegas. It looks as someone just took a piece of europe and placed it in the desert.

Enjoying some gelato...Neil added a chopped up cliff bar to his and later decided that was a bad idea! Now only 1.5 hours home...

After almost 4.5 hours on the bike we were tired, thirsty, hot, hot, hot, sunburned some more, and ready to relax. I went for a 30 min run off the bike when we got home and Neil got an early start on the ice bath. Then we decided it was time for dinner and Whole Foods was our best option.

Salmon and rice topped off with some coconut water

After eating dinner a guy came up to us and started telling us his life story. The cliff note version was been to prison (San Quentin), has 3 kids 2 different girls, became rich went broke, and hates Las Vegas. Basically we got the major creeper vibe when he told us he shanked someone in prison, so it was time to leave. It made for a great end to the evening and matter of fact I got to thinking Las Vegas isnt such a bad place, at least we had a good time. Although something tells me our Vegas experiences were two very different scenarios.

Until tomorrow....

Day 5: 85 degrees and sunburned

To much of a good thing can be a bad thing, and in our case its the sun. Temps have really started to heat up and our bodies have soaked in as much sun as they can handle. Oh well in two days its back to Boise so back out on the roads we go. Our plan for the day was to take things a little easier doing all three sports. We both didn't wake up till 9am so that's definitely a good start to taking it easy. Around 11am we hit the track for 30 min easy running followed by 4x200 fast.

Finishing a quick 200

Neil BangsWorkout #1 done now

Around noon we drove to the outdoor pool that we swam in yesterday. We had such a good time swimming outside that we wanted to take the opportunity to do it again. The swim set would be 500 swim, 20x50 band only, 30x100 pull for 5k total. I like doing this set because you can just relax and get into the "zone" for the 100's.

Me finishing up with paddles

Neil cooling down

Workout #2 done and some lunch I am spent..oh wait still have to bike!

Finishing up the evening with 2 hour bike

Racing the sun back to the hotel

That concludes day 5 here in the desert. We finished off the evening making a gourmet dinner in the room, sardines and potatoes. Tomorrow I will include some pictures of our kitchen!

P.S Tonight's sleep on this sunburn is going to be brutal, I think tomorrow we will skip the outdoor pool swim!

Until tomorrow.....

Day 4: Groundhog day

This morning I woke up and was pretty wore out from the long, hilly, windy bike ride, and last three days of training. Waking up each morning with one thought, what are we going to do today? A week of pro triathletes life...I think? Like they say when in Rome...or in our case sunny Las Vegas we tend to do a lot of volume on the bike. Getting a sweet tan to go back and make our friends in Idaho jealous is also a top priority! Neil started off the day with a 30 min run, while I decided to enjoy sleeping in. After breakfast it was just like Sunday, bike to the pool and swim then bike home, hence the groundhog day title.

Neil all smiles after finishing 2x1000pull cooldown

2 hours in the pool its time for some food!

Soaking up some Vitamin D

Henderson Mulit-generational pool (20 lanes) 78 deg...Perfect swimming!

A quick stop for some shots at starbucks and we hit the road. Neil pushed the pace hammering out a big gear for the last 30min. I just tried to hang on his wheel! Then back to the hotel to get running clothes and go for a 4omin transition run to seal the deal. Me running along the old railroad

Neil with Lake Mead in the background

Running out of one of the tunnels...I am in the lead on the right!! (No we are not wearing the same shorts and we did not plan on wearing the same color)

Until tomorrow.....

Day 3: Ghost town adventures

Today Neil and I started with the plan of doing a easy bike in the morning, run session in the afternoon, and then hill repeats in the evening. Well things did not go as planned, because it turned out to be one of those days that curiosity took over. Like maybe lets just ride over that hill, or just 10 more miles. So we started to ride towards Nelson, Nevada an abandoned ghost town. What started out as a short ride ended up being 4 hours!

The view as we climb away from the hotel. Lake Mead in the background. CLIMB, CLIMB, CLIMB...that's all we do all day.

On our way up to Nelson (ghost town) I saw something flashy on the side of the road....A samsung digital camera. As you can see from the picture it was a real treasure, side note: this pic is a reenactment, but you definitely get the idea! It is terrible that someone lost such a treasure, and yet it brings me so much joy to find. Keep in mind finding the owner would be next to impossible so I will keep it :) P.s Neil and I thought how cool it would be to find crime photos on it and solve a mystery. Well at least we can dream of a real life CSI scenario taking place!

Neil looking super-aero and speedy. After taking a double caffeinated gel he put the hammer down on the last of the 11mile climb to Nelson.

Half way point 2:15 hours- We arrive at Nelson...It was definitely worth the detour. We were greeted with candy bars and juice. As we sat down and reminisced about the town, the owner reached in the freezer and pulled out two rattlesnakes...weird? But she did have interesting stories that we listened to while consuming massive amounts of processed sugar.

Checking out the ghost town

Several movies have been filled at the town...maybe you recognized one of these? The host did tell us that Hollywood has offered to buy the site....But her dad wont sell! Matter of fact he put in his will that if the kids don't want the property to run then they have to sell it to the state of Nevada. Haha now that's funny!!!

After 4 hours on the bike we were ready to run....I was getting sick of hills, wind, and biking by then end. Funny how your emotions can be so up and down because as soon as the run started I felt great. We did a bunch of running drills in the grass barefoot in the park.

The evening consisted of icebath, pizza, and early bedtime. Then wake up and do it all again!!

Until tomorrow.....

Day 2: Things are heating up

Today we started off with a 30 min run, just a little something to get the legs fired up for our big journey. After breakfast we saddled up our bikes and headed off to the pool. Our plan was to bike about 25 miles then swim 5k, and then bike home. Sounds easy right..... Neil and I starting the ride....

Then Neil had to take the lead and I just tried to hang on (or so he thinks!)

Google maps let us down big time because we never found the illusive Whitney Ranch Pool. After circling around in some not-so-nice neighborhoods we stopped and asked someone where the pool was. He instead told us that we were a long way from the pool, and we should just swim at the pool up the road. Call it serendipity but things worked out perfectly since this was by far the nicest pool I have ever swam in. For 2$ we were able to swim in a 14-lane 12ft deep massive saline lagoon. Okay all kidding aside we had work to do, and 5k in the pool later we were ready for our bike home.

I think Neil is a little spent after that workout (2x300, 4x25 fast)x4

Before we head back Neil decides to get some sun and eat....

(I think he unzipped his jersey for the pic!!)

We decided to stop at this bakery for a snack and some much needed sugar. In hopes of getting some awesome scone, cookie, etc. we end up with this lackluster chocolate french scone thing. Basically not worth the money or calories but it was nice to sit for a moment.

Check out these two white boys and their sweet tan lines! You bet by the end of the week we will be bronzed and fit. Or at least one of the two, time will tell!

Until tomorrow.....

Boulder City Triathon Camp

Neil and I decided to make our way down to Boulder City, Nevada for a week of training in the sun. After a "quick" 11 hour drive south from Boise we were greeted with 25 mph winds and 40 degree temps. We Checked into our super fancy accomadations at the Hacienda for 19.70 a night! Believe me in this case you get what you pay for, although the room does have two beds, so far the absence of bed bugs has proved to be a real bargain. Since the morning brought cold temps we decided to recon the motel, excuse me hotel property. Hiking around the massive rock croppings where you can see for miles passed the time until the weather warmed up.

Training started with a solid 6k in the pool. The pool is covered with a bubble and was like a jungle inside. You know that feeling when you go to the dentist and they dry off your teeth with cotton balls, that is what my mouth felt like for 90 minutes. No complaints though because we did have the pool to ourselves.
After lunch and a nap we went for a 45 min run on the old railroad tracks that has been converted to a great running trail. The temperature was about 60 degrees, and coming from a cold winter in boise it sure felt good!

There are several of these tunnels leading to Hoover Dam

P.S. Do not leave babies unattended at the Hacienda parking lot

Then we cleaned up and head to town, boulder city. The brewery had a pretty solid IPA on tap that made for a great end to the first day. 6 more days left!

Night Cap at the Boulder Dam brewing Co.

Until tomorrow.....
